James Barrett
James (Jim) Barrett is currently a 20-year veteran of the Chesterfield County Police Department in Virginia. He has over 25 years combined experience between law enforcement and the military with his last decade of service as a corporal detective with the Special Victims Unit of CCPD. Prior to CCPD, Barrett served as an officer and detective with the Richmond City Police Department where he was the first detective hired to provide dignitary protection for Mayor Douglas Wilder. Prior to his civilian LE career, Jim served as a criminal investigator for the U.S. Army and was team lead for a special response unit at a nuclear facility. During the height of the Afghanistan War, he served as an operator with a government contractor throughout all of 2007 into 2008 with a focus on counterterrorism, interrogation and intelligence, receiving the Danish Dancon medal in 2007. His law enforcement career includes numerous specialties such as polygrapher, homicide, narcotics, SRO, child forensic interviewer and general DCJS instructor. Barrett is a lead instructor for interview and interrogation to CCPD officers, detectives and recruits.
During his law enforcement career, he was recognized in 2011 with the VA School of Polygraph Academic Merit Award, 2012 National Service Award, 2019 Veterans of Foreign Wars Detective of the Year Award, 2024 CCPD Detective of the year Award and recipient of more than 10 Chief’s Commendations.
